One way to enjoy the Texas Hill Country is to drive around its surrounding cities. If you’re planning to do so, be sure to plan your routes ahead to see the best views the place has to offer. Take pictures along the way and stop by quaint small towns for a good stroll. To get the best views, these routes should definitely be on your road trip.
1. Willow City Loop
This loop boasts of Texas’ iconic bluebonnets. You’ll see them everywhere! Plan your drive in spring to get the best views and make sure to do it on weekdays to avoid the heavy traffic. Stop by Harry’s for lunch to get the real authentic Willow City Loop experience.
2. River Road Along Guadalupe
Drive around this road when you are in New Braunfels. Be surrounded by lush trees and nature, and if you are looking for an outdoorsy activity to do, take a quick dip or tube in the Guadalupe River.
3. Swiss Alps of Texas
This drive lives up to its name. See stunning views by taking Bandera on 470 and 83 to Concan and back through Leakey on 337 to Medina. Along the way, stop by to taste some local apples in Medina, tube in the river, or take Instagrammable photos along the Frio River.
4. Twisted Sisters Loop
This route is perfect for all motorcycle enthusiasts. A 100-mile long trip beginning in Medina, passing through the quaint town of Leakey to Texas 41. During this trip, you’ll see Garner State Park and the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, and Lost Maples State Park which are both near Vanderpool.
5. Gruene-Fredericksburg-Bandera Loop
This loop starts in Bulverde which will take you to the quaint German town of Gruene. Stop by and see Texas’s oldest dance hall. After Gruene, you’ll pass by Canyon Lake, a place where fishing and boating are very well-known. From there, go west to Luckenbach and take a stroll in one of the must-visit places in Hill Country. On Highway 290 make a left and there you’ll be welcomed by the small quaint German town of Fredericksburg. From Fredericksburg, head south on Highway 16 through Kerrville, Medina, and Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of Texas, and finish the loop going to San Antonio.
6. Devil’s Backbone
Legend says this route is haunted but it surely offers great views. If you’re up for the thrill, then this ride is for you. It begins at San Marcos RR 12 west where it will connect with RR 32. And there you’ll see a limestone ridge known as the “Devil’s Backbone.” Stop by Devil’s Backbone Tavern for some local experience.
